“For the Kids!” |Operation Christmas Child

11 11 2014

My son was uber-excited this year to fill boxes for Operation Christmas Child like we did last year. We chose to sponsor 2 girls ages 10-14 because, well, I have a family of boys. I picked up our boxes and coloring pages from Chick-fil-a last week. E filled in the 2 coloring sheets with info about his favorite things to include with our family’s boxes.

For several days now, he’s been walking around saying, “For the kids! Kids coming to E’s house! C’mon, kids! Toys! Box!”

Mixing up trick-or-treating and shopping for the kids.

But he LOVED sorting and matching the items we selected, tossing them into the box for me to carefully arrange as we talked about what each item was and how the girls could use them.

Before shopping, I carefully read the OCC website’s guidelines for packing and also perused Pinterest for ideas on what to pack and how to pack space-effectively. This is what we included in our boxes after shopping at Target and Dollar Tree as a family:

  • 3 glittery plastic drinking cups
  • toothbrush
  • toothpaste
  • 2-3 bars of soap (scented, whoops! They’re supposed to be mild.)
  • hairbrush
  • comb
  • cute hair wrap/headband
  • cozy socks with gripper feet
  • crayons
  • colored pencils (but I couldn’t find sharpeners that looked safe to send!)
  • glittery spiral notebooks
  • Rubik’s cube
  • Fun striped, colorful pencils
  • 2 large, decorated emory boards
  • rainbow paracord survival bracelets (made by my husband)
  • tissues
  • 1-2 packs of gum
  • 2 sticks of ChapStick

We’ll drop them off at Chick-fil-a tonight. I purchased barcode box labels online (not pictured) to be able to track the boxes around the world (although it didn’t work last year). I’ll update once I find out their destinations!

What sorts of things do you pack in your box? What is your favorite way to give back during the holiday season and throughout the year?
